Grimsby’s ‘Fighting Fisherman’; Jerry Thompson (1888-1969) by Harry Shaw c1905.
Jerry Thompson was a boxer from Grimsby known as the ‘Fighting Fisherman’. He had a long career running from 1904 until 1927. He had 35 fights and won 21 of them. (Two were a draw.) His style involved fierce aggression! Can anyone add more information about Jerry Thompson? An original photograph by Harry Shaw of Grimsby. On the on the reverse of slightly later photographs, Shaw gives his address as Grant Thorold Studio, 54 Durban Road. Note: The wife of Harry Shaw, Florence Maud Shaw of 13 Wentworth Road Grimsby, died in 1951. To date, we have not been able to trace Harry after 1911. Did he die in WW1? Their daughter, Phyllis Shaw who died in 1976, is buried with her mother in Scartho Road Cemetery. Florence and Phyllis were living with Phyllis’ sister, Myra Woods, and husband in Grimsby in 1939.
