
A bottle belonging to wine merchant John Henry Alcock of Grimsby c1894-1910s.
An original, green glass bottle. John Henry Alcock was born in Barton upon Humber on 7th April 1867. He was baptised on 19th May. His parents were Henry Weston Alcock and his mother was Mary Letitia Alcock (née Morley). They married in the Glanford Brigg area in 1866. Henry Weston Alcock became a wealthy businessman. He owned the brickworks at Barton and was a wine merchant in Grimsby. Mary Letitia Alcock died in 1892 and Henry became bankrupt in 1894. (JHA continued the business.) In 1895, Henry Weston Alcock took 7 of his children on the ‘Orizaba’ to Australia where HWA helped his sons establish successful careers. One of his sons had already gone to Australia a few years earlier. John Henry Alcock, the eldest son, remained behind in Grimsby as a wine merchant. John had married Louisa Tong in the Grimsby area in 1889. In 1901, John Henry and Louisa Alcock were living at ‘The Limes’ in Stallingborough with their two sons and John’s aunt, Sarah A. Kennington. In 1911, John Henry and Louisa and one son were living at Wyndhurst, Pelham Road, Grimsby. John Henry was still a wine merchant at 5 & 6 Old, Market Place, Grimsby. John Henry Alcock was the managing director of an engineering products company in London in 1921 and in Whitstable, Kent in 1939. He died on 23rd November 1942 in Tankerton, Kent. He is buried in Whitstable. Note: John Henry Alcock was the owner and licensee of the Pestle & Mortar Public House, Old Market Place, Grimsby and the Imperial Hotel, Cleethorpes.
