
Grimsby Rural District Council coat of arms 1961-1974.
A large shield dating from 1961 to 1974. Grimsby Rural District Council was in existence from 1894 until 1974. It was responsible for governing the parishes surrounding Grimsby and Cleethorpes. The arms were officially granted on 20th June 1961. GRDC was incorporated into Cleethorpes Council in 1974 and subsequently into North East Lincolnshire Council in 1996. The crest shows an ancient ship with a beehive, for industry, on one sail and scallop shells on the two others. Above are two two dolphins representing the maritime location of the area. The motto is “BY FAITH AND INDUSTRY”. The shield was presented to the Grimsby Rural District Council by Councillor Major Reginald Clixby L. Fitzwilliams JP, MA, FCAC, C (1916-2009). A resident of Healing, near Grimsby for over 60 years, Major Fitzwilliams was a watercress farmer who served as a magistrate for 26 years, a local councillor for over 30 years and was appointed deputy Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire.
