Two letterheads from Trent Guns & Cartridges Ltd., Grimsby 1932 and 1934.
Both of these original letters were sent to Messrs. Louis Lachaussee, Rue de l’Yser 400, ANS LES LIEGE, Belgium. The letters are signed by C. King, director. Trent Guns & Cartridges Ltd. first appeared in the 1920s. It was part of the Liverine group of companies. Liverine Ltd. manufactured poultry food (and later, dog biscuits) in Fraser Street, Grimsby. The shot tower was built off Fraser Street c1931. (Liverine’s mill and offices, the Trent factory and the yard with the shot tower were all around the area where Kingsgate Mews is today.) An associated company, Trent Lead Pipe Co., gun makers, was located in Welholme Road in 1933. By 1937, Trent Lead Pipe Co., lead pipe manufacturers, and Trent Guns & Cartridges Ltd., gun makers, were co-located in Welholme Road. The shot tower in Fraser Street continued to provide shot for the new premises in Welholme Road. The good times for Trent Guns & Cartridges Ltd. were through the 1930s. The company made fuses during WW2. After the war, the company’s fortunes declined when they concentrated mainly on making lead pipes. The company closed c1953. Note: Liverine Ltd., pet food manufacturers, were still in Fraser Street in 1970. This company was started in c1890 by Thomas King who came to Grimsby from Essex. Note: Hendric Maurice King, son of Thomas King, was the company director of Henry Bright & Sons, Ltd., manufacturers of foods. (See the “Crisp-It” exhibit on this site.). Another of Thomas’ sons, (Joseph) Harold King, was, apparently, the chairman of Clover Dairies.
