
The grave of Dame Eugenia Doughty O.B.E. (1874-1934), wife of Sir George Doughty (1854-1914), at Scartho Road Cemetery.
Photos taken on 7th July 2023. Lady Eugenia Bertuance Doughty (née Stone) was a six foot tall Australian journalist from Melbourne. She met her future husband, Sir George Doughty M.P., on a ship travelling from India to England. Five people are buried in the grave. (Note the incorrect spelling of Eugenia.) Our daughter Cherry Mavis STONE died 21 June 1920 age 11 years 3 months also Ennis Gwendolyn STONE wife of T. Sylvester STONE J.P. died 25 December 1936 age 48 Dame Eugenie DOUGHTY O.B.E. died 24 June 1934 age 60 Thomas Sylvester STONE J.P. died 27 November 1940 age 75 Ernest W. WHITEHEAD died 13 September 1926 age 49 Thomas Sylvester Stone J.P., born in Melbourne, was the brother of Lady Doughty. He emigrated to Grimsby. He was a chartered accountant and was active in local politics. He became Mayor of the Borough of Grimsby in 1936. His daughter, Cherry Mavis Stone was born in Brighton, Victoria, Australia in c1909. Thomas and wife, Ennis, must have left Australia for England sometime after 1909. They lived at ‘Bridge House’ Deansgate, Grimsby. Ernest William Whitehead, of White Lodge, Regent’s Park, London, married Margaret Frances Stone, Eugenia’s sister, in Grimsby in 1914. He served in WW1 as an Acting Lieutenant Paymaster, Royal Naval Reserve. They lived at ‘The Briars’, Welholme Road. Ernest died on the White Star Line ocean liner RMS ‘Megantic’ from a ruptured gastric ulcer. He was a purser on the ship. Margaret Frances Whitehead went to live with her brother, Thomas Sylvester Stone, at 1 ‘Bridge House’, Deansgate after the death of Ernest (1939 Register). She died on 7th February 1942 and is buried somewhere in Scartho Road Cemetery. Note: George Doughty, widower, married Caroline Eugenia Bertuance Stone at St James’ Catholic church, Spanish Place, London, on 15 August 1907.
