Mock cenotaph and Queen’s Observatory in People’s Park c1920 (colourised).
An original, unposted, photographic postcard by the ‘Doncaster Rotophoto Company Ltd’. This company produced excellent photographic postcards from 1918 until 1923. The image was colourised by Grimsby & Cleethorpes Museum in 2023. The wooden, mock cenotaph was erected in People’s Park in c1919. Grimsby’s permanent Cenotaph was erected on Nun’s Corner in 1921. It is similar but larger than the earlier, mock version. In the background can be seen the “Queen’s Observatory” (“Southworth’s Folly”). The Observatory was opened by the Mayoress in 1900. It had a spiral staircase with a step for every year of the Queen’s life. The tower gradually deteriorated and in 1940 the iron railings and columns were sold. The tower was then in a dangerous condition. It was demolished in 1949.
