An original carte de visite (CdV) photograph. The photographer’s name, A. Clark of Cleethorpes, is ink-stamped on the reverse. Alfred Vurney Clark was born in c1849 in Lincoln. He was the son of Henry and Jane Clark. Henry Clark was a bazaar keeper in Wragby in 1861. They had 4 children, including Alfred, the youngest. By 1881, Henry had died and Jane was a general dealer living in Yarra Road, Cleethorpes. Alfred, aged 31, was living with his mother and working as a photographer. Alfred Vurney Clark married Elizabeth Kaye in Brigg in the first quarter of 1891. The 1891 census shows the couple living at 30 Wrawby Street, Wrawby, near Brigg. He was still working as a photographer. Elizabeth died in 1910. Alfred died on 4th August 1911. (Probate was granted to Frederick Charles Clark, brush manufacturer.) The couple are buried in Brigg Cemetery. There is a memorial. Note: Frederick Charles Clark as possibly Alfred’s brother. He died in Brigg in 1925, aged 71. Note: Alfred’s sister, Emily Jane, was born in Winslow, Buckinghamshire.
