A wartime, painted photograph of a small Grimsby boy by Sid Burton 1941.
An original, large framed portrait. The photograph has been heavily overpainted by the photographer/artist. Sid Burton was a highly respected, top-class, professional photographer. His work, such as this and his commercial photography, was known well outside the Grimsby area. Apparently, he was also successful in national competitions. In the later part of his career, Sid Burton’s shop/studio was located on the corner of Wellowgate and Abbey Road. We believe we know the identity of the boy (M.B.). The portrait must’ve been a rather expensive commission, even in wartime England. Perhaps Sid Burton created this wonderful work for an exhibition? The iris markings in the eyes and each of the eyelashes have been very carefully overpainted using a very fine brush and black paint.
