
RAF Kelstern: veterans pay tribute to colleagues from No. 625 Lancaster Squadron who did not return 1956.
Photo 1 from a small series of photos taken at the ceremony on the 15th April 1956. Veterans stand with their wives and families on the deserted Kelstern airfield. The Reverend Robert Ball, chaplain of RAF Binbrook, conducted the short service using a simple altar set on the broken brickwork of the old crew room, now wrecked. Amongst those present were ex Flt. Lt. Clement Koder, ex Flt. Lt. L. T. Eaglesfield, Mr. & Mrs. E. A. Vickerman of Louth, ex Flt. Lt. Fred Davy of Elkington near Louth, ex Warrant Officer Lesley Hakes of Broughton and ex Flt. Lt. William J. Stevens of Grimsby. Five Gloucester Meteor aircraft from No. 616 Squadron, RAF Worksop flew over as part of the ceremony. The next service on the airfield was in 1959. “We Avenge”.
