William Edward Sherlock, photographer (master), was born in Dorking, Surrey on 11th December 1874. He was the son of Thomas, a carpenter, and Lois Sherlock of St. Martin’s Place, Dorking. In 1891, aged 16, William was a photographer’s assistant in Dorking. He was living with his parents and three siblings at 85 Hart Road, Dorking. In 1901, William Edward Sherlock, aged 25, was a boarder in West Ham, London (27 Sebert Road – still there) and working as a photographer. On 21st July 1906, William Edward Sherlock of 41 Victoria Street, Grimsby married Katie Louise Banbury, the daughter of a hotel proprietor (Bell Hotel, Week St.), in Maidstone Kent. Katie Louise Banbury was born in Deptford, Kent. William and Katie Sherlock lived at 47 Littlefield Lane in 1907 and at 5 Sackville Street, Grimsby from before 1911. William’s studio was at 3 Old Market Place, Grimsby. They were still at both properties in 1937. The couple had two children; William Neville Banbury Sherlock on 22nd April 1907 and Kathleen Sherlock on 30th May 1917. Katie Louise Sherlock, William’s wife, died on 19th September 1937. William and daughter Kathleen were still living in Sackville Street in 1939. The son of William and Katie, William Neville Banbury Sherlock, went to school at Trent College, Long Eaton, Nottingham. He died in Poole, Dorset on 16th March 1981. The daughter of William and Katie, Kathleen Sherlock, married Frederick B. Fisher in the New Forest, Hampshire in 1940. This is very close to Poole where her brother died 41 years later. William Edward Sherlock of 30 Laceby Road and 3 Old Market Place, Grimsby died on 3rd June 1944, aged 69. Probate was handled in Winchester, Hampshire by Sydney Stewart Wild of Bournemouth where his son and/or daughter probably lived. (Coincidentally, Sir Arthur Conan’s Doyle’s famous sleuth, Sherlock Holmes, had connections to Winchester.) Note: Sydney Stuart (Stewart) Wild married Kate Jane Sherlock of Dorking, Surrey. She was, for certain, (Jane) Kate Sherlock, William Edward Sherlock’s sister. Research by Grimsby & Cleethorpes Museum.
