Hancock’s Amusements, Cleethorpes; a ‘Donlion Series’ postcard circa mid-1920s.
An original, unposted, real photographic, ‘Empire View’ postcard by Charles N. Jamson, Doncaster. A ‘Donlion Series’ postcard. ‘Donlion’ was set up as a new postcard publishing company in 1924 by Norman and Reginald Jamson following on from (John) William Jamson’s ‘The Doncaster Rotophoto Company’ (1918-1923) when it had cash flow problems. (John) William Jamson died in 1920. The photographer, Claude William Jamson, (John) William Jamson’s grandson, later moved to Hessle where he worked as a photographer and continued to produce postcards into the 1940s. Joseph Rodgers Hancock (1860-1943) was born in Sheffield. He moved to Cleethorpes as a cabinet maker and later became an “Amusement & Refreshment Caterer” on the Foreshore at Cleethorpes. He built Hancock’s ‘Palace of Pleasure’ on the beach and his family were involved in running the business. The ‘Palace of Pleasure’ gradually evolved to ‘Arcadia’ in the 1940s and it was destroyed in the 1953 storm. The foundations can still be seen. Note: Joseph Rodgers Hancock lived at 21 Elm Road, Cleethorpes until his death. Presumably, this was “Kandylea”.
