The Lodge, Scartho Road by S. J. Warren c1925; colourised.
An original, posted, real photographic postcard by the brilliant photographer, Stanley John Warren (1890-1963). Colourised by Grimsby & Cleethorpes Museum in 2024. The lodge was by Scartho Road, opposite Conyers Avenue. Today, the entrance to Scartho Top is not far away. Scartho(e) Hall is behind the lodge. The poster on the left is advertising “Scarthoe Garden Party and Fête”. (It appears to be dated July 192?, but it’s impossible to be sure.) The postcard was posted in Grimsby by Mrs Beal on 28th August 1926. Her address is given as Oaklands, Fairfield, Scartho. The recipient was Mr Frank Smith, 220 Lancing Road, Sheffield. The message reads, “Having a splendid time. Wish you were here. Hope you are well. Love Mrs Beal.” Frank Smith (born 1898) was a sheep shear maker for Ball Bros. of Penistone Road. In 1928, Francis Robert Smith (known as Frank) married Florence Beal in Sheffield. In 1939, Florence’s mother, Mrs Florence Beal (another Florence) was living with the couple. The postcard was obviously sent by Mrs Beal to her future son-in-law. Stanley John Warren was an excellent and prolific photographer working in the Grimsby/Immingham area, especially in the 1920s and 1930s. His address was 225 Hainton Avenue, Grimsby earlier in the 1930s and 53 Ainslie St., Grimsby by later in the 1930s. Stanley Warren was born in 1890 in Leamington, Warwickshire. He served in WW1 and was a photographer in the Royal Engineers in 1921. He came to Grimsby from Eastbourne, Sussex. Stanley married Elizabeth Lingard in Grimsby, during WWII, in 1944 and he died in Grimsby in 1963, aged 72. Many important photographs, which we treasure today, are the result of the skills of Stanley John Warren. His initials ‘S.J.W’ can be seen on a large number of excellent, real photographic postcards.
