
A silver trowel presented to Walwyn T. Chapman on the occasion of his laying the foundation stone of Barcroft Street Schools 1895.
Displayed here with thanks to Antony Chapman, grandson of Walwyn T. Chapman. Walwyn T. Chapman was a well-known terra-cotta manufacturer and brick maker in Cleethorpes during the later part of the 19th century and early years of the 20th century. This superb trowel was made by Mappin & Webb, Manufacturing Goldsmiths & Silversmiths, Oxford Street, London, W. The inscription on the trowel reads: PRESENTED To Walwyn T. Chapman Esq JP CHAIRMAN OF THE CLEETHORPES SCHOOL BOARD. on the occasion of his laying the Foundation Stone, OF Barcroft Street Schools. December 17th 1895. BY CROFT & BENTLEY ARCHITECTS Note: The Imperial Hotel, Grimsby Road, Cleethorpes was also designed by Croft & Bentley, architects, of Grimsby and Louth. The partnership existed from c1895 until c1903.
