An original, advertising carte de visite (CdV). Charles Chapman was born in Hull in 1847. He was the son of George, victualler, and Caroline Jane (née Roberts) Chapman. George(1806-before 1871) was born in Flixborough, Lincolnshire and, by 1861, was Messenger to the Court of Bankruptcy – Leeds District. Charles Chapman married Margaret Bennington in Hull in 1871. Charles was a commercial traveller in the glass and bottle trade. Daughter, Mary J., was born in Hull in 1870. Daughter, Caroline Beatrice, was born in Leeds in 1874. Son, Charles Leopold Granville (1876-1951), was born in Hull in 1876. Their other children, Harold Adolphus (1880-1960), Gertrude Nora (1881-), Lily Dora (1883-) and Grace Flora (1886-) were all born in Grimsby. By 1881, Charles Chapman was a cattle oil manufacturer and the family were living at 171 Willingham Street, Grimsby. By 1991, Charles was growing his business. He was also a town councillor and ‘guardian of poor’. The family were living at 239 Cleethorpe Road. Charles Chapman died in Grimsby in 1899. His address at the time was ‘Chestnut House’ 62, Cavendish Street, Grimsby. Son, Harold Adolphus Chapman took over the business which was then called Chapman & Son, Royal Cattle Oil Manufacturers. Chapman & Cos., Cattle Oils Ltd. was wound up in 1946. After a merger, the company became Chapman & Frearson Ltd., animal feeding stuffs manufacturers / veterinary chemists, Victoria Street, Grimsby. The company became very well known nationally into the 1990s. The company brand name is still in use in Scotland today. The company name is also associated with a number of livestock and equine trophies. Note: Commander Lionel Valentine Granville Chapman RN (1901-1978) was a son of Dr. Charles Leopold Granville Chapman FRCSI. Note: Dudley Erskine Granville Chapman, solicitor, (1908-1984) was a son of Dr. Charles Leopold Granville Chapman FRCSI. Note: Alfred Noel Granville Chapman (1912-1930), articled pupil with a firm of Grimsby solicitors, was a son of Dr. Charles Leopold Granville Chapman FRCSI. Note: Cecil Hastings Granville Chapman (1919-1972 in New Zealand) was a son of Dr. Charles Leopold Granville Chapman FRCSI. Cecil’s godfather was Somerset Maugham, the playwright. The manufacturing of cattle oil is said to have been started by Charles Chapman’s family in 1824. We are currently trying to verify this. Also, is there a link with Lord Granville?
