
SS ‘Staveley’, a passenger and freight vessel on he Grimsby-Hamburg route c1910.
An original, unposted, real photo postcard. No photographer or publisher is given. SS ‘Staveley’ was built by C. S. Swan & Hunter Ltd. on the River Tyne and was one of four vessels built for the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway as Grimsby-Continent ferries. She was launched on 1st May 1891. Her sister ship, SS ‘Nottingham’ was also built by Swan Hunter and was launched on 13th March 1891. SS ‘Lutterworth’ and SS ‘Leicester’ were built by Earle’s Shipbuilding & Engineers, Hull and were launched on 8th April 1891 and 8th June 1891, respectively. In 1897, the MS and LR became the Great Central Railway. SS’ Staveley’ survived a collision off Spurn Point in 1914. She was scrapped in 1932. SS ‘Nottingham’ was scrapped in 1935. SS ‘Lutterworth’ was scrapped in 1933. SS ‘Leicester’ hit a mine in the English Channel in 1916 and sank with the loss of 17 of her crew.
