Butlins, Skegness in 1946.
Construction of the holiday camp at Ingoldmells, near Skegness began in 1935 and it opened in 1936. Shortly after the start of the Second World War, the Admiralty requisitioned Butlins Skegness to be the first Royal Arthur stone frigate (land based establishment). It was commissioned as a training establishment on 22 September 1939. Over 4000 naval personnel were based at HMS Royal Arthur at one time. During the war, the German airforce bombed Royal Arthur 52 times. After the war, Butlins Skegness reopened to the public on 11 May 1946. This professional photo was taken just two months later, in July 1946.
