A cover sent from Knockaloe P.O.W. Camp, Isle of Man to Grimsby 1916.
Wartime
Knockaloe Camp, on the Isle of Man, was the world’s largest WW1 Internment Camp and was the centre of the UK Government’s aliens policy. Over 23,000 internees were held there. Researchers at the Knockaloe Visitor Centre have a copy of the details on the envelope. If they find a match on their WW1 Civilian Internee Database, they will get back to us. It’s possible that the writer was a foreign seaman picked up on board a merchant vessel.
