Cleethorpes roller hockey club girls 1910 (and a link to a once-famous, Cleethorpes murder).
An original photograph dated 9 3 10 on the reverse. The photographer is unknown. Note that one girl has ‘CRHC’ on her cap. The photo has an accompanying letter sent by Beatrice Robinson of Elston House, Mill Road, Cleethorpes to ‘H’. Presumably, Beatrice is one of the girls. James William Robinson married Sarah Ann Grant in Cleethorpes in 1886. Their daughter, Beatrice, was born in Cleethorpes in 1887. Sarah Ann of Elston house, Mill Road, a member of the Grimsby Board of Guardians and a well-known social worker, was brutally murdered on 14th March 1919 at the home of her friend, Mrs Elizabeth Anne (Annie) Evans of 41 Wollaston Road. The killer was Joseph Woodhall, a former sergeant in the Manchester regiment. Sarah Ann, aged 52, died following a blow to the head from an Indian club. Woodhall legged it but handed himself into the station-master at Waltham. He was in a poor state. In June 1919, Woodhall was declared insane. Note: Sarah Ann Robinson, amongst her other activities, had established a home for soldiers in Brighton Street.
