
Walter Scott; Grimsby Town Penalty King 1909.

Walter Scott was the first goalkeeper in the Football League to save three penalties in a single match. The match was a Second Division game against Burnley. He also saved 14 of 17 penalties during the 1908-1909 season. Walter Scott appeared for Grimsby Town 80 times between 1907 and 1909. He then moved to Everton, Sunderland, Shelbourne, Belfast United and Worksop Town. (He also played as a wartime guest for Brentford and Millwall.) He played 19 more games for Grimsby Town in 1920 before finishing his career at Gainsborough Trinity. Walter Scott was born in Worksop on the 21st January 1886. He was the son of baker George Jackson Scott and Mary of 36 Norfolk Street, Worksop. From 1904, Walter played football for Worksop West End, Worksop Central and Worksop Town before moving to Grimsby town in 1907 when he was about 21 years old. Walter Scott married Kate Spalding in Worksop in 1908. Their children were Catherine Edith Scott (born in Grimsby in 1909) and Gwendoline Mary Scott (born in Peterborough in 1911). Walter Scott’s brother, William, was also a goalkeeper. In 1939, Walter Scott was carrying on the family profession as a baker at 38 Ryton Street, Workshop. Walter died in 1955, aged 69. ————— George Henry Greenwood was born in Grimsby in 1886. He was the son of George Greenwood (1858-1950), tailor, and Annie (née Coggon) from Yorkshire. They lived at 150 Freeman Street. George was a photographer in 1901, aged just 15. By then, the family were living at 10 Granville Street. George married Mary Hannaford Blackmore, born 1888, in Grimsby on 21st February 1909. They lived at 36 Hainton Avenue until at least 1921. Son, Eric Greenwood, was born in 1912. Mary Hannford Greenwood died on 5th June 1926. (Her address is given as 30 Hainton Avenue. The same address as her father-in-laws when he died in 1950.). George Henry Greenwood married for a second time in 1927. He married Florence Webster. They lived at 30 Hainton Avenue. George Henry Greenwood died on 25th December 1958. Florence died on 14th April 1985. They had both lived at 24 Roundway, Grimsby. (Florence had a son called Ben Webster, a police sergeant, born 13th November 1915.)
