This image inspired to write the following lines some years ago on Rod Collins’ now defunct blog: An imagined conversation between the lady friends in the window – To be read at a Betjemanian tempo if you please To ‘The Other Tearoom‘ darling, creaking slightly ‘neath our feet, Lets cross the floor to yonder window – watch the to-and-fro-ing street. Elegance is here demanded, both of dress and etiquette Don’t you think that George Street has it, style and charm that lingers yet? Time to order – here comes ‘Missie’, smart and prim in short-sleeved cuffs, What’s your preference of the pastries? Croissants, Danish or Cream Puffs? I shall order, to accompany, lapsang souchong for today, Will you have this aromatic or prefer the old Earl Grey? I’m so pleased that dear old Rodney brought me here last Tuesday week Never knew this place existed, don’t you think its rather chic? Here’s our order, coming over, promptly served with classic charm The linen’s cloth looks even cooler ‘neath this shady fronding palm. Well, I’m sated now – are you? Such a perfect place for tea We must come again next week, perhaps we may be joined by V… If you and I both spread the word, you never know who might turn up To let the world unwind its troubles while imbibing from a cup.
